Windows phone 7 - a waste of space?

Windows Phone 7, from every screen-shot I've seen so far, has left me asking a simple question: Why have Microsoft wasted so much space on the "home" screen? (see my edited picture for what I'm on about)

When you've only got 3 inches of screen real estate to play with why aren't they utilizing the whole shebang?

So maybe Microsoft are thinking "lets add some quirky to this mix - lets see what we can do to raise some eyebrows".

So to stand out from the crowd they're going to make the home screen layout half an inch smaller than the width and height of the screen and then left align the whole thing - like the internet in 1994. Looks great.

But don't worry if you hate the home screen as much as me because they have handily added a "to the next page" button (I presume) in the wasted space, allowing you to escape from this screen of eye caltrops.

To add to how bad the screen already looks they've added a massive Internet Explorer button, which fills me with feelings of bulky-slow security vulnerableness. Maybe that's why I haven't looked any closer.
